A Reflection on John 1:6-8, 19-28
“A man named John was sent from God. He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to testify to the light.” ( John 1:6-8)
Joy… that third candle on the Advent wreath… the dawn is breaking, the light is coming. The anticipation builds in my heart. He is preparing us for something. Keep waiting. Emmanuel, God with us, is coming to bring us back to Himself.
The light… the light is coming into the world! The light by which we see all things in truth. He makes us see; He changes the way we see. It has been so dark, but the light brings good out of the darkness, because without the dark we wouldn’t appreciate the light. And without the light we would continue in darkness, believing this is it, that the world is confined to only what is in front of us. The light changes that; it changes us. It makes us see the world in a new way. It brings Joy.
John, you came to testify to the light. I want to testify to the light. I want to be like you. Not taking glory for myself, but pointing to Jesus, always pointing to Jesus. I must decrease, He must increase. I am so little. All I have is so little. And yet I have a mission. I have a mission ordained by God. And whatever it is, it is called to be a testimony. I am not He. I cannot claim to be the savior of anyone. I cannot take on the saving of anyone. He alone saves. But I can point to Him. I can testify to the light.
Make straight the way of the Lord! Clear your hearts, straighten a path, and let Him come.
