A Reflection on Ezekiel 34:11-17
This Sunday is the solemnity (solemn feast or celebration) of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. What an incredible reminder that we so desperately need today. Jesus is King. Let that sink in: Jesus. Is. King. And how does our King rule?
As a shepherd to scattered sheep.
“I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered when it was cloudy and dark.” (Ezekiel 34:12)
It is cloudy and dark. We are scattered. We are wounded. We are so very lost.
He will rescue us. He has promised us this, and He is a God who keeps His promises.
“I myself will pasture my sheep; I myself will give them rest.” (34:15)
A time is coming, little one, when I will come to you. I, myself. I will not send a messenger, I will not appear through a different form. I will come to you, and you will see my face, and I will give you rest. Do not worry. I know all is cloudy and dark now. I know it is hard to understand. But I care for you more deeply than the shepherd cares for his sheep. I will not leave you desolate.
You have only to keep still. Stay with me, remain in me. I will be your light through the fog, through the darkness. If you stay close to me, you will not be lost. I will lead you through this.
“The lost I will seek out, the strayed I will bring back, the injured I will bind up, the sick I will heal.” (34:16)
But if you do become lost, do not lose hope. There will be times when the voices of the world drown out my voice, when you are so blinded by anger and frustration that you cannot see the right path. You may start to wander and find yourself confused, broken, and sick. I see your pain and confusion; I see it all. In those times, do not despair. Lift up your face. Call out my name. If you are lost, I will seek you out and bring you back. I will bind up your wounds, heal your sickness, and hold you close to my heart.
I am the servant King, the Good Shepherd. Hear my voice, trust my voice, and follow me.
